The extensive Porto Masso complex, in St. Julians, of thirty-story office building, conference center, apartments, restaurants, shops and Hilton Hotel around a picturesque marina cove exemplifies this trend. Tigne Point, just opposite Valletta in Sliema, is another prime example. The local design community, from decorators to architects, has been strengthened due to the lively demand for luxury housing and facilities by foreigners as well as by the discerning design interests of sophisticated Maltese consumers. Malta is, after all, one of the most financially stable countries in the world. Years of austerity, difficult at the time, served as a foundation for what is reported to be a cautious and prosperous financial and banking sector. The consistent arrival and long term presence of mega yachts affirm the seafaring nation���s deep maritime history. Safe harbors with excellent support services that once lodged the legendary fleets of the Order of Malta and the British Empire now have the rare capacity to accommodate the largest yachts in the world. Malta exclusively builds using indigenous stone. Her stonemasons, carvers and contractors sustain deep knowledge in all matters relating to these building materials. They are among the few in the world still capable of executing such structures. So embedded in the community culture is this activity that barely a generation ago, a small Maltese Gozotan village completed St. John���s Parish Church, inspired by Venice���s Salute, its dome one of the largest in the world.
