Numerous other firms, large and small, cater to a wide range of budgets and taste. T he Malta design community is making its voice heard. Malta Design Week, now in its second year, is serving to galvanize awareness of Malta���s status both as marketplace for design and as a creative center. The event was organized substantially by Chris Briffa, mentioned above, who turned to designing furniture intended as both fine art statement and utilitarian masterwork. Inspired by Piet Mondrian and Gerrit Rietveld, Briffa exhibited at Malta Design Week a bookcase ���which fits somewhere between a large painting and an item of furniture.��� The workshops, talks and exhibitions at Malta Design Week reveal a strong theoretical as well as practical bent in the Malta design narrative. The event posed timely questions about the basis and future of the design impulse. Malta Design Week was a sophisticated gathering of European minds devoted to and focused on design, architecture and decoration.
