I n July of 2011 I visited Malta for the first time in eighteen years, with the exception of a brief stay for a godsons christening. I was in contact with former Tourism Minister Joe Grima in the preceding months. During the same period he had a severe accident, which led at one point to a life-threatening situation. Reminiscing during his convalescence about our past efforts together substantially led to my writing Malta Knights and to the July visit. Several individuals involved in the story have died, but Joe Grima and former Prime Ministers Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici and Eddie Fenech Adami are still very active. At 95 the venerable former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff is not in the best of health. He resides at home not far from St. Peters Cove where, during one of his daily four season swims, he gave me windsurfing lessons. Joe Grima has his own live, weekly television show, Incontra, and Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici regularly appears on Maltese Smash Radio and Television. After a long, impactful premiership, Fenech Adami served as President of Malta and is now a senior statesman. Joe Grima (seated) with his daughter Chase and me, summer 2011. HYLAND
