During the meeting with Prime Minister Mifsud Bonnici, Christopher proposed to him that Fort St. Angelo be returned to the Knights of Malta, officially known as the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta���S.M.O.M. Christopher���s idea landed on my desk with both a call from the Prime Minister and a follow up note from him ���to see if we could find a way to realize it.��� Fort St. Angelo, as Hyland envisioned it, should be revived by handing it over to the S.M.O.M., who had formerly occupied the Maltese Islands. A massive fortress, St. Angelo was built by the Knights in the sixteenth century in the center of Malta���s main harbor, Grand Harbor, in order to defend the island from attacks by the Ottoman Empire.
