A
s Minister responsible for Maltas Tourism in the
early eighties I could never have known that an American
gentleman I had never met before would eventually become
a close friend and one with whom I would share a vision.
Christopher Hyland was cruising the Mediterranean with
family and friends in the mid 1980s when he stopped at
Malta. He had an introduction to Moira Mintoff, the English
wife of Maltas legendary Prime Minister, Dom Mintoff, under
whom I served first as Minister for Industry and then as
Minister of Tourism. Mintoff had just resigned the premiership
handing it over to Dr. Karmeno Mifsud Bonnici, a prominent
civil lawyer never before involved in politics. Moira Mintoff
arranged for Christopher and his party to meet her husband
and then he in turn arranged a meeting for them with the
new Prime Minister Mifsud Bonnici.
