I have always had an affinity for this room. Its scale and
height verge on the monumental but remain adequately
domestic. The chamber still has the intimacy necessary
for the music that bears this description and the current
President and First Lady use it for those purposes among
others. Yet at one end, a large alcove with a lower ceiling
is separated from the room by short return walls and two
large Ionic columns with gilt capitals.
Known for her adroit modernist sensibilities, yet always
with comfort and peace of mind at the center of her design
