A
successfully eclectic interior should gently startle, not
shock. In designing the interior of this house in Greenwich,
Connecticut, Jack Montgomery masterfully melds midcentury modern with Regency and diverse antique
furniture, augmenting the whole effect with bold bursts of
color, especially the color purple, against pure white walls
and woodwork. Purple is a notoriously difficult color, the
hue of hippies and monarchs. On the other hand, it was
incorporated liberally by Charles Rennie Mackintosh into
his radically tasteful white interiors, in the form of carpets,
upholstery and embroidery.
