numerous others, infused with multifaceted cultural yearnings during an era when travel was still exceedingly dangerous (the School would also generate remarkable works on
this subject), plied the Atlantic and Mediterranean worlds for
subject matter. They were exceedingly cosmopolitan.
John Frederick Kensett���s New England Coastal Scene with
Figures (1864) is just about my favorite. Obsessed with this
region���s coastal rock formations as a child, I became increasingly aware of how the study of these coasts comprised,
eventually, a body of scientific knowledge that would in turn
contribute to the substantial American understanding of the
