however, were the eight handsome title-pages printed
in French and English: might the shop have those as
well? ���The title-pages?��� the shopkeeper replied; ���we
didn���t think that anyone would want those. I might still
have them in the attic. If you watch the shop, I���ll go and
take a look.��� When she finally brought the eight pristine impressions downstairs, she informed me that their
value was negligible; would I pay ��40 for the lot? Indeed
I would, although matting and framing them has been
a much more expensive enterprise! And having ventured this far, I couldn���t say no to collecting prints of the
vases as well, and that led me to Michael Finney, who
not only sold suites of ���Hamiltons��� but eventually offered
me the entire set of twelve attitudes, which had been
re-engraved in London and printed on paper that had
been hand-colored in (what else?) vivid terracotta. So
now the vases, the title-pages, and the attitudes share
contiguous spaces in my bedroom, having been rudely
elbowed out of the sitting room by a host of Piranesis ���
but that���s another story. H
