Monsieur Robert Treboux
On a recent visit to Paris to shoot a segment at Versailles,
I thought of Le Veau dOr when I went with an NBCLXTV television crew to dinner, thinking that even here
in Paris its difficult to find such a thorough remnant of
the epicurean prewar French bistro environment. I often
judge such environments by pondering whether Brassai
would have photographed his famous Bijoux in such a
space. As much as this iconic image depicts a woman
far past her prime and less than prosperous, it also conveys the feeling that she knows exactly where to go for
a satisfying drink or meal in a convivial atmosphere.
Since 1985 Monsieur Robert Treboux has been the proprietor of Le Veau dOr. His attractive daughter, Catherine Treboux, is the current chatelaine. His handsome
countenance and demeanor resembles that of a French
general or ambassador. Often seated on a bench reminiscent of those found at the Jardins du Luxembourg
outside the restaurant, he guards entre, Gallic beret
and all. Behind him, displayed in the restaurant window
