With outstanding ghillies, friends enveloped by protective gear,
the ritual of preparation, reinstruction, hours of fly fishing pass
in what seems like a few moments. Even with Norman Gillett
of Ballyvolane House, the Irish national fly fishing champion,
painstakingly guiding me, I am committed each time to return
with an American football helmet: the hook seems to fly at me
rather than away, however prosaic my movements. In the aftermath of fly fishing there is a certain strange satisfaction in the
