in each image, the yin and yang of New York���darkness
and light���yet both sides are teeming with action. Night
is not a time of stillness and fog but of flashing motion.
In Times Square the irony is that there is hardly any contrast between day and night. Both hemispheres are a
collage of monumental electronic billboards. And both
sides of the image summon beautifully the excitement
of walking, or rather rushing, through Times Square on
foot at any hour: the density of crowds, the fascinating
variety of people, the call of shows and hotels and restaurants.
In Park Avenue the sky is dominated by night, the street
by day. This night sky is inky, smoky, even a bit Steichenlike in its dark mystery illuminated by the Chrysler building and other skyscrapers. One sees the former MetLife
