physical
environment
was made possible in this
once very remote area by
the commerce revealed
in several of the previous
photographs.
These photographs are
important visual records,
drawing attention to poignant issues of change
and continuity in an area
of the Middle East sequestered precariously
along a narrow coastline.
The cultural expansionism in the form of museums, openings, educational institutions and
performances
would
have been unimaginable
in this area as recently as
a generation ago.
