Winston at work,
Acrylic on canvas
2011
his Nautilus shell photograph, would be enamored of
Sandys art. Hands On, 1990, statuary marble with color inlay is my favorite among this genre of her work.
Edwina Sandys possessed the strength of character to
move beyond and out from a secure milieu to engage
artistic discourse when she left her familiar life in London for New York. She refused to be a fossil lingering
from another era. Instead she moved forward, expressing bold ideas in bold works of art. She is in no ones
shadow.
Her direct ancestor for whom she is named, Sir Edwin
Sandys, established the first representative assembly in
the New World at Jamestown, Virginia in 1618, the
precursor on American soil to the constitutional liberties we enjoy today. It is fitting that Edwina Sandys create a memorial to this event which will celebrate its four
hundredth anniversary in 2018.
Sir Edwin Sandys
Sandys grandfather and fellow artist, Winston Churchill,
said History will be kind to me, I intend to write it
myself. The exact same situation applies to Edwina
Sandys Art: history will increasingly be kind to her
work, substantially because she has created a prolific,
masterful body of work in diverse media and because
it is both self-reflective and engaged in broad historical
issues. Her art is strong enough, possessing superb balance and deft execution, thereby assuring it will have
the last word. H
