through their attendance. After the marquis came down I realized that the Boston Common, a swath of green provided by
ancient elms, chestnuts and sycamore trees and lawns would
remain. It is a permanent entertainment, one provided by nature and good, sound civic planning, for citizens to enjoy daily.
As the years progressed I realized how vital even the smallest
park was to the common good, to the wellbeing and general
happiness of everyone.
Once settled, America created vast national parks at Yellowstone, Yosemite and elsewhere. New and ingeniously conceived urban parks improved New York, Philadelphia, Saint
Louis, San Francisco and the nation. Newark, New Jersey
ended up with two great Olmstead parks, a remarkable distinction. The beautiful park movement consumed Americans.
The Boston Common remained unique, an ancient American
