some other families who had escaped up to the hills, the sea
being too dangerous to stay by.
We then had to get back to Yokohama, again not knowing what
awaited us there. It was a walk of over 20 miles. We did this with
my father having me strapped on his back and Barbara on the
back of our cook. He was from the north of Japan and people
there are taller and darker than the average Japanese in Honshu.
As we came back via a village the villagers there set upon this
cook with Barbara on his back, with knives and sent him rolling
in the dusty road. ey were suspicious of this dark tall man,
as they were anxious to blame anyone who could be thought
responsible for the catastrophe that had overtaken them. Such
is the power of hysteria! H
