HYLAND
Anne Collier and John Chapman, who as children lived
during this time, provided the photographic memories.
Their childhood recollections are blissful yet many of the
individuals whose houses are pictured here, or who are
depicted in these photographs, would have harrowing
experiences as a result of the war years. Numerous among
them would be interred in arduous conditions, others would
pursue long, circuitous routes to safety and at least one
would remain in Japan, the unfortunate victim of leprosy.
Through all these experiences and in the many decades
since these photographs were taken, there are still happy
memories of the community and an abiding affinity for the
aesthetic world—both that which was Western yet abroad,
and that which was Japanese.
