HYLAND
Anne Collier's and John Champan's blissful
childhood world came to an abrupt halt just before the
Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941.
The foreign community in Japan substantially recreated
the familiar architecture of Surrey and New England
in Japan while following the social norms of their
compatriots back home.

decorative sensibilities, household staff, and events
that surrounded them, the pre-world war II 1920's
and 1930's in Japan impacted the foreign community
residing there in ways that would inform the trajectory
of their lives.
