line linking to the city, but also seemingly from the
sensibilities and dimensions of a modern age. The
most compelling feature of this property and what
would greatly inspire my work, years later, is the
relationship of the building to its land. The constant
view of the Potomac River, with its very high and
rocky cliffs and park-like setting, have remained
for almost a hundred years, singularly spectacular
and unblemished by the unrelenting growth of the
suburbs to Washington which now surround it."
