Established in 1836, the oldest and arguably the
most "issue oriented" gallery is Oslo Kunstforening, which
is situated next to the lively Celsius cafe, and found by
passing through a quaint little court-yard off Radhusgaten
Street. Here the Artistic Director Marianne Hultman is
known for giving a platform to young talent who "raise is-
sues, provoke thought."
Emphasizing that contemporary art is increasingly
popular among Norwegians, she says, "the Oslo art
scene is very vibrant. Artists in Norway now have careers
abroad, government grants allowing them to work in
other countries, and this gives them a new vision. Our art
academies are also very generous to foreign students.
They stay here. That adds to our new perspectives, this
new vibrancy."
That sense of change—rife with a palpable and
infectious enthusiasm—is also felt at other Kvadraturen
galleries.
At the Tegnerforbundet gallery, the vivacious CEO
