HYLAND Anne Collier's and John Champan's blissful childhood world came to an abrupt halt just before the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. The foreign community in Japan substantially recreated the familiar architecture of Surrey and New England in Japan while following the social norms of their compatriots back home. But in countless ways, evident in construction, gardens, decorative sensibilities, household staff, and events that surrounded them, the pre-world war II 1920's and 1930's in Japan impacted the foreign community residing there in ways that would inform the trajectory of their lives.
