HYLAND As a native Californian, I know every nuance of that seductive state, from my hometown Los Angeles, Seat of the Beast, to Berkeley, onetime hotbed of student protest, eternally a wonderful enclave of Beat cafes and bookshops. In between there is Santa Barbara, and especially Montecito, where the sun penetrates rather more gently than in the Southland, but is not beset by the fogs of San Francisco which hamper that hallowed city.
