This house in Paradise Valley, Arizona emanates harmonies that remind us of other visual arts, notably that of the great painter Edward Hopper, chronicler of 1930s and '40s American modernity. Though Hopper painted a terrain different from that of Arizona, Simon has created vistas and interiors that echo the stretches of land one sometimes sees from a Hopper window, the sparing, sweeping angles depicted in his rooms. In the living room of this house, in particular, one is confronted, not so much by a beautifully orchestrated tableau—although it is that— as by a perfect moment of music, arrested, crystallized.
