hen HYLAND gave me–a dogged couch, no, bed potato–the assignment of writing about Spartan racing, I quailed. I faint at even the narrative, let alone the prospect of exercise. However, in reading co-founder of Spartan Race, Joe De Sena's bio, I found surprising inspiration as one does in any tale of aspiration and achievement, physical, artistic or intellectual. I can understand the urge towards endurance racing only by analogy to the academic races I went through in my youth, but let me try to paint a lively picture of this most lively sport. Essentially an elaborate obstacle race–a sort of fitness Stations of the Cross–the Spartan Race is about overcoming seemingly insuperable barriers until, in triumph, one finally crosses the finish line.
