Tanizaki would have approved of O'Brien's crystal lamps, which take, in the simplest, most direct way, an object of natural translucence and make it a vessel of electric light. Of her own history of lamps, O'Brien writes, "When I was little, my mother was always coming home with different light fixtures and lamp shades. She would change them…around the house, like most women…change their earrings. I was always amazed how that could transform a room. I was also transfixed by dimmers. I always thought they had magical powers…still do." O'Brien traces her affinity for gemstones to working as a teenager for a West Indian grandmother who owned a gem shop and wore a hundred beaded necklaces all at once. O'Brien's newest lamp, named "Robert" after "a jewel of a friend" is wildly distinctive, for it is made out of a bright, almost persimmon-colored citrine. Having come upon an interesting formula for a table lamp, the variety of visual effects O'Brien uncovers in it is as inexhaustible as Nature herself.
