ewelry has always served, not only as adornment, but as memento and even memorial: think of the woven mourning jewels, impossibly intricate, the Victorians made from the hair of a dead beloved. Mark Andrew Pettigrew is rather less morbid, but no less mindful of the power of jewels to summon the presence of what has gone before, whether lover, friend, place or journey. He is steeped in all four phenomena, creating, mostly through the medium of charms, pieces that transmit actual material traces of what is past, or lost. Pettigrew does not wear the yoke of mourning, but rather the trophies of a poetic rake- -not unlike tattoos-- talismans of adventures, amorous and otherwise.
