As a coda, one remarks in the very presence of newer, small galleries on the Lower Eastside, a heartening resurrection of SoHo in the early 1970s, shadowy, early industrial streets not yet glittering with blue-chip investment and emporia, but enclaves of art that is truly new and experimental. After the Sturm und Drang of Borrman's opening, Tanja Grunert and Klemens Gasser invited guests to a bountiful repast at the Hand-Pulled Noodle Shop on nearby Doyer Street. Even an article as reproducible as a noodle is an artifact worthy of attention as well as consumption. H The illegible writing across Borrman's canvases reminds us of that on the disc: both bear inscriptions. sees his paintings as "baffles" for the sound generated by the audio system, a Gesa- mtkunstwerk in which the viewer/listener is enveloped by a unified visual and aural phenomenon. His playlist from the opening night is drawn from Bruce Springsteen and David Bowie, among others, a concatenation of '80s and '90s sounds which tacitly--or loud- ly--explicates the works on the walls, and vice versa.
