the world of design, or are they its muse? This exhibition would seem to declare they are both. Much has been made in the press, notably Ken Johnson's review in The New York Times, of the inclusion in the exhibition of objects designed by men and by the preponderance of female designers' frequent collaboration with a (more famous) male partner, such as the couple Charles and Ray Eames and the alliance of Le Corbusier with Charlotte Perriand. Johnson also notes, as if domesticity were a demerit, that almost everything in the exhibition "is for domestic consumption, including dinnerware, ceramic vases, ashtrays, fabrics and toys," instead of "tools, automobiles and skyscrapers." While it is true, as Johnson says, that women beginning in the late 19th century were channeled into the making of smallish objects of applied or decorative art, it is true, equally, Gae Aulenti (Italian, 1930-2013).
