he Museum of Modern Art is devoting almost a full year— an exhibition in two parts—to a subject surprisingly still under-studied, the impact of women in the arena of modern design. "Designing Modern Women, 1890-1990" is a loaded title, depending on whether one assumes the word "Designing" to be a present participle, describing an activity of modern women, or a plain verb, of which modern women are the direct object. Having had the good fortune, from 1988 to 1989, to study under the exhibition's curator Juliet Kinchin, then a professor at the University of Glasgow, I can imagine her wry wit had something to do with the ambiguity of this title.
