HYLAND If Deborah Bowness' trompe l'oeuil papers exalt the domestic object, photographer Tony Koukos brings the wide world of his travels to his wallpapers, whether in the form of a wall of Moroccan tiles, or a peeling pentimento in India. At NLXL's booth the designers and representatives were dressed in smart white housepainters' jumpers; the works on display were equally shipshape in a setting designed by Job Smeets. Founded in the Netherlands in 2010, NLXL is known for the Scrapwood Wallpaper Collection, brainchild of designer Piet Hein Eek and NLXL founders Rich and Esther Vintage. NLXL wallpaper is notable for having no repeat; no two planks in the Scrapwood collection are alike; each tin in the Brooklyn Tins collection is unique. NLXL's latest design foray is "Archives," a collaboration with Studio Job, founded by Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel. From their library of icons and images, elegant, sometimes ironic—Labyrinth, Industry, Withered Flowers, and Perished (a print of the skeletons of extinct animals)-- existing patterns were adapted to compositions of nine meters, again with no repeat. Finally, Meystyle has changed the face of wallpaper forever by incorporating tiny, jewel-like LED lights and Swarovski crystals into its undulating patterns, creating tableaux that twinkle and sparkle like the night sky, the ultimate trompe l'oeuil.
