At the beginning of this article, I said that ICFF was not the place to search for a comfortable couch. Ted Nemeth's Brooklyn Leather concoctions do make one physically comfortable—they adapt the ancient forms of fauteuil and Chesterfield—but psychically uneasy: neo- Gothic, faintly S & M furniture of black leather, replete with corset-like lace-ups, grommets and ebonized wood, sometimes even brass knuckles. Nemeth is no stranger to the tattooist's art, emblazoning his pieces with cryptic symbols. If furniture emanating from Brooklyn tends sometimes to have a slightly too wholesome air of handicraft, Ted Nemeth single-handedly redresses the balance. Besides the ever-metamorphosing chair, lighting was another locus of much innovation and change at ICFF. Designers seemed to embrace light fittings, especially pendants, as opportunities, a la Alexander Calder, to make sculptures suspended from the ceiling, providing visual Erin Sullivan Design HYLAND
