HYLAND the frieze was aided by Gladding, McBean's original ink on vellum drawings of the facade. Organized around the palm court, each of the four sides of the house is devoted to a particular function, with public and private spaces clearly demarcated. The north side has bedrooms, the south, the kitchen and family living areas and the east side is all about entertaining. Renovation of Solana, built originally as a summer house, has taken three years; Santa Barbara architect Don Nulty and designer Joan Behnke were enlisted to at once conserve the tangible history of the house while adapting it to contemporary needs.
