Opening Reception for Maggie's Centres Exhibition Not at all. Bringing art to more and more people, making it accessible, should be celebrated. Stained glass in Gothic cathedrals were a means to convey meaning to the masses. Computers do the same thing today. Where do you stand on 'ready made' art, inaugurated by Duchamp. Is it art in the same sense as something made from scratch by the artist?What is "from scratch"? If an artist doesn't mix their own pigments but uses paint from a tube, or samples images or music in a creative way that brings new meaning, is it ready- made? As long as there is significance, it is art. How does the NYSID confront the "do it yourself" culture? It doesn't need to be a confrontation. e more people are exposed to and appreciate good design, the more relevant education becomes for those with a genuine interest in becoming professional designers. What does an education at NYSID comprise beyond technical expertise? How do you transmit to your students the spirit of interior decoration? We emphasize a strong foundation in the history of the profession and the decorative arts. Design reflects its context in time and space. Our students recognize their work as part of a continuum that connects the past to the future. Does NYSID still emphasize drawing by hand? Yes. Drafting, perspective drawing, hand rendering are all taught during the first year. Computer-aided design programs are introduced in the third semester.
