I swear that even if we had a week to talk about it I would still not be able to explain the dynamics of the Kula ring exchange. Anthropologists—notably Malinowski and Mauss-- studied every nuance of this phenomenon for decades. Within each village and group of islands, the Kula constitutes a way of building relationships over generations and years. You inherit a relationship and have to maintain it; it can change completely in a day, so fragile is it yet so deeply rooted. From our perspective it seems theatrical. There are so many rules.
