HYLAND rethinking of the partitions which enclose us and our inanimate companions: our furniture and objects, ourselves. A room may be miraculously expanded, both spatially and psychically, by, for example, a clever trompe l'oeuil wallpaper; walls themselves may be transmuted by their 21st century re-creation in all manner of new materials, constitutive or covering. At this year's ICFF, it was wallpaper, architectural wall coverings and new kinds of freestanding partitions that particularly captured my attention. A two-dimensional surface lends itself to infinite variation; the second skins shown by a large number of designers invite us to transform completely our surroundings by a process almost as simple as applying a coat of paint. Modernism has made room for pattern, and pattern we saw, often of ancient and venerable motifs given a new twist. Timorous Beasties
