Interior designer David Dalton, in this Los Angeles house,
has employed every form and furbelow of the decorator's
art, the emphasis being on upholstery, draperies and
pillows that are nothing less than sumptuous, most often
in mouth-watering tertiary pastel shades. And yet these
rooms, too, have their
moods, with a number of the
walls lacquered or papered
in dark colors, including
black. Most elegant is the
media room, resembling
a gentleman's library, with
paneled walls painted
black against which four
tall fauteuils surrounding
a small round ebonized
and gilt Regency table are
upholstered and tufted
in satin of palest green.
The carpet is a zebra-like
pattern of pale green and
chocolate brown. Above
the grey and pink marble
fireplace is a contemporary
photograph of a female
nude, porcelain pink skin
draped in green, in gilded
frame. Many decorating
schemes fall apart in the media room, with dignity giving
way to rumpus room sportiness. Dalton's seigneurial
chamber is a lesson to his fellows.
Another room, seemingly prepared for casual dining or
drinks and snacks, features a small hexagonal mirrored
HYLAND
