In his 1994 treatise, Baroque Baroque, its
illustrations set off by lavish gold and magenta graphics,
decorative arts historian Stephen Calloway writes:
"…'baroque' is about more than amplitude of form and
swirling movement. It is about more than just colour
and opulence and the quality of materials or the simple
elaboration of decoration. Indeed, 'baroque' has always
been far more than just a decorative style; it is ultimately an
expression of a certain artistic temperament, an attitude
to life and art. The baroque of the twentieth century,
this curious, hybrid, referential, highly-strung and self-
conscious baroque—this 'Baroque Baroque'—remains
the twentieth century's one great and whole-hearted
affirmation of delight in the richness and grandeur of
things."
