he annual Inter national Contemporary
Furniture Fair (ICFF) meets the daunting task of seeking
out and presenting truly innovative forms in contemporary
furniture, lighting and textile. I say "daunting" because the
twentieth century saw such revolutionary innovation and
variegation in the design of furniture, that one often feels
there is little left to be said or done. Not so, if the 2014
ICFF is anything to go by.
One of the most interesting exhibits at the fair was the
lighting shown by Fred & Juul, a trade name which stands
for the collaboration between Italian architect Federico Min-
arelli and Dutch architect Julie Janssen. The pair creates
very contemporary designs that are nonetheless inspired
by old customs and techniques, using venerable materi-
