In the loggia resides an antique limestone fireplace, imported from France; an antique Italian walnut coffer is filled with cashmere throws for the comfort of guests, who, of a cool evening, repose on Brenda Antin's marine-finished outdoor wicker. The master bedroom is yet another ornate melding of rich European artifacts: a bed Steichen designed to incorporate the Havens' painted Italian altar fragment, dressed with custom monogrammed linens from Leontine Linens of New Orleans. A rock crystal chandelier is made from Italian fragments; and the painted sofa is upholstered in Claremont patterned damask with an antique vestment pillow. All in all, the unusual estate which is Cal-A-Vie is a repository of many treasures, many currents. Steichen notes that she has been the Havens' interior designer for a decade, and the painstaking, incremental detailing she has created for them speaks of this long relationship. Says Steichen, "When [the Havens] bought the spa, they were treating it like an extension of their home, a guest retreat for 24 guests… [Now] we've added a 17,000 square foot fitness pavilion, a bath house, a beauty salon…" The expansion goes on and on, promising to make Cal-A-Vie a San Simeon of sorts, a latter-day California castle orchestrated by inspired owners and a designer capable of taking on Versailles.
