School. "…I believe in the possibility
of a...Lakota studies curriculum…that
acknowledges a proud but often
disheartening past and transforms into
a bright and open future…[Students]
must know there is a possibility for
them to connect with the world as
modern Lakota people with strengths,
dreams and passions."
Underscoring the preservation and
celebration of Lakota tradition is the
presence, on Pine Ridge Reservation,
of one of the earliest Native American
cultural centers and museums in
the United States. The collections
encompass treasured Native artifacts
from the Great Plains and beyond as
well as contemporary works of Native
American art. The Heritage Center
serves also as an economic engine
to Pine Ridge, with a renowned gift
shop and online store selling work of
local artists.
