"I hoped to create a shop with an Old World European
flavor," says owner John Doyle, who has reinvigorated the
art of chatting with customers—and of clairvoyance—
knowing exactly which book patrons will devour. "While
Barnes & Noble engulfs you with toys and games, we just
want to shower you with personalized service."
He succeeds, as does his counterpart in a downstairs
den, rare book dealer David Johnson. A retired NASA
engineer, who always dreamt of selling first editions, he's
now enjoying "a new adventure," passionately describing
