"I hoped to create a shop with an Old World European
flavor," says owner John Doyle, who has reinvigorated the
art of chatting with customers—and of clairvoyance—

Barnes & Noble engulfs you with toys and games, we just
want to shower you with personalized service."
He succeeds, as does his counterpart in a downstairs
den, rare book dealer David Johnson. A retired NASA
engineer, who always dreamt of selling first editions, he's
