HYLAND
for the only retrospective of Beuys' work to take place in
the artist's lifetime. There one made a journey tantamount
to a walkabout, tracing the steps of Beuys' heroic career
as one might revere the deeds of an ancestor. Through
photographs of his performances, vitrines containing
assemblages of objects, installations, writings and
drawings, one did not so much view Beuys as meet him.
The charisma of the artist suffused the already intriguing
spaces of the Guggenheim.
Sean Kelly's well-chosen exhibition made it possible for
us to meet Beuys once again in the form, arguably, he
favored most. H Lisa Zeiger
