Once, in Hollywood, I had the privilege—and fun—of
seeing an entire pied-a-terre decorated by the owner,
production designer Peter Paul Raubertas, in full Panton
regalia: purple free-form sofas, a plethora of "Fun" lamps,
with their cascades of semi-translucent hand-cut mother
of pearl shells. Raubertas' apartment was a small world
from James Bond, of whom he was an ardent fan.
The "Fun" lamp is versatile; it could mesh well with
diverse interior styles. But Panton's chairs are another
story, so radically do they depart from the conventions
of chairhood—legs, for example. Vitra now reproduces
