A more up to the minute element of Kang's installation are
the actual "books," she has fashioned from LED lights,
resin encasement and custom electronics. The books
are closed: we see only their covers and titles; they exist
as totems rather than legible entities. But they remind
us that words on a page or cover are more than mere
signs; they have a visual, ontological presence in their
own right. Typographers, from Boldoni to Gill, long before
the digital age on which Kang's works are a meditation,
have exploited the visual being of letters to the fullest,
shaping letters and texts that are talismans of beauty as
