HYLAND
From the International Contemporary Furniture
Fair's (ICFF) exhibits of the past decade, one could
write a most colorful history of contemporary design,
for the Fair makes space both for venerated classics
of contemporary design and those iconoclastic
productions which startle and provoke. The design of
the 21
st
century so far is one of incremental change in
form, radical transformation in terms of materials, often
recycled. One person's trash is another's (transformed)
treasure, and ICFF is eco-sensitive, aware of new trends
in managing the world's slender material resources.
Speaking first of the venerable, the Bellini stacking
chair, designed by architect and industrial designer
Mario Bellini for Heller in 1998, was an instant classic.
