airs of gracious living, many of them in his family—who
hail from South Carolina, where they have lived for over
two centuries—for decades. HYLAND, in earlier editions,
has already documented Johnson's inspired Silver Room,
located in the Maryland State House, a small masterwork
of inspired historicism, not to mention the significant Manor
House in Virginia. Johnson's own house is a pleasing blend
of traditional and contemporary furnishings and artifacts,
"an expression of old and new blending together [reflecting]
southern traditions of family, friends, food, pets and the
constant flow of all these [which] make home life for me a
vocation ."
