et design is a form of interior decoration as powerful
as it is fleeting, unreal yet momentarily immersive. Some
of my favorite interiors—once which have made a lasting
impression—come from cinema and stage. I think especially
of the films of Bernardo Bertolucci—Last Tango in Paris,
The Last Emperor, The Sheltering Sky—in which place and
setting, whether room, desert or Forbidden City, are at least as
compelling as the director's protagonists.
Avant-garde scenic and costume designer Zane Pihlstrom
hails, not from Europe, but from a "lonely Oregon farm" where
