eff McKay is a decorator by gifted avocation rather than
trade, a writer, photographer, independent curator and former
adman who, when it comes to his own houses, in Litchfield,
Connecticut and Miami, Florida, brooks no outside counsel.
His Miami house is a Baroque modern world of indoor/outdoor
living, a series of vibrant tableaux achieved with panache,
leavened with humor. McKay has a keen eye for the witty
object and yet his rooms are serene, certain of them surpris-
ingly formal. His moods swing between tongue in cheek and
near-solemn, as in his beautifully plain dining room, its tall
pale green walls unadorned, letting the gabled, beamed ceiling
