Challenges of running an enterprise like Syon e basic challenge is obviously to match revenue to expenditure. e cost of maintainance, restoration where required, utilities, wages, taxation are all a significant burden. Revenue comes from rents on buildings and businesses (such as the Hilton Hotel within Syon's grounds), visitors, corporate entertainment, filming, weddings and other events. A challenge is to do all this without damaging the very thing we are trying to protect. Our hope is to put everything in good order for the next generation to take on. Scottish Independence I love Scotland and have a home there. My wife, my mother, grandmother, great grandmother etc are/were Scottish. I think it would be very sad to see Scotland go independent from the UK as I think we are better standing together. What architect would I commission? I briefly studied 17th Century British architecture and greatly admire the work of Wren, Vanburgh and Talman but prefer the simpler style of Hawksmoor as expressed at Uppark in particular. He would be my choice . Misguided trends It is hard bring innovation to old buildings and gardens because of the protectionist mentality of our planning system and whilst protection and preservation is vital, old buildings can benefit from modernisation so that families can live in them as homes – not museums. Lessening historical impact of one design period? e ugly, utilitarian uniformity of post war housing estates typify the worst of our architectural heritage.
