HYLAND
The Turret Rooms are possessed of particularly piquant
charm; the one at the north-east end of the Long Gallery
was painted by Fowler a pale pink and ornately decorated
with classical composition stucco--garlands, acanthus-
-and on the domed ceiling, gryphons. Hanging from the
ceiling is a late 18th century mechanical singing bird
with a time piece. Gilt chairs with needlepoint upholstery
with nosegays of roses are set at a small chess table.
Robert Adam's rooms at Syon House are more than
beautiful, they are a repository of a classicist's knowledge
and of his superlative eye, a lesson to the latter-day
artist on forging and expressing meaning in architecture
and interior decoration.
